One of the most common questions I heard during an insurance review is: “Do we really need that much insurance?”
And the answer is… it depends.
Recently, I reviewed an insurance policy for friends who had moved back to Buffalo. Like many people during a move, they needed to get coverage in place quickly while they focused on settling into their new home.
Once they were unpacked and life became a little less hectic, they reached out and asked me to review their insurance to make sure they had the right protection.
The good news? Their policy was actually pretty solid.
They had good coverage on their home and auto, and there weren’t any major concerns. But after taking a closer look, I found some opportunities to strengthen their overall protection. We adjusted some coverages, added additional protection they didn’t previously have, and I was still able to lower their overall premium.
That’s when the question came up:
“Do we really need that much insurance?”
There Is No Magic Number for Insurance
The truth is, no one “needs” a specific amount of insurance.
The right amount of coverage depends on what you’re trying to protect.
Your insurance should be based on things like:
- The value of your home and belongings
- Your vehicles and how they’re used
- Your savings and assets
- Your income and future earning potential
- Your personal comfort level with risk
Insurance isn’t about buying the biggest policy possible just because you can. It’s about making sure your coverage aligns with your actual situation.
Why Insurance Reviews Matter
Many people purchase insurance and then let it renew year after year without ever taking another look.
But life changes.
You may have:
- Purchased a new home
- Renovated your property
- Increased your savings
- Bought new vehicles
- Started a business
- Had changes in your family situation
Your insurance should evolve with those changes.
A policy that was right for you several years ago may not provide the same level of protection today.
The Goal Isn’t Always More Coverage—It’s the Right Coverage
A good insurance review isn’t about trying to sell you more insurance.
It’s about asking the right questions:
Are your limits enough?
Are there gaps in your coverage?
Are you paying for coverage you don’t need?
Are there ways to improve protection while reducing your cost?
In this case, the answer was yes—we were able to create better protection while lowering their premium.
That’s why reviewing your insurance matters.
Your insurance should be a reflection of the life you’ve built and the things that matter most to you.
If it’s been a few years since someone has reviewed your policies, or if you originally purchased coverage quickly during a busy season of life, it may be worth taking another look.
Sometimes a review uncovers a coverage gap. Sometimes it uncovers savings. Either way, knowing you have the right protection brings peace of mind.
Grab your coffee, and let’s talk about it. ☕
